This project had us design a poster for the Royal Opera House's "The Magic Flute", as they run a design challenge every year through their National School Program. With this unit, we learned about layout and hierarchy and were introduced to InDesign for the very first time.
The layout and contents of the poster were predefined, so the main focus was to produce the imagery to match one of the 'Director's visions' and combine the two to make the poster. For the final poster,I drew inspiration from a papercut task we did in class as a response to Saul Bass. I cut out the two figures with their symbolic headdresses (Sarastro with the sun and the Queen of the Night with the moon) out of cardstock, and played with the positioning of them on the page, with the Queen falling, as she's the real antagonist, and Sarastro rising as the good character.
As much as I like the image I made, I feel the ovearll composition of the poster isn't quite right, simply because the text should lay on a plain background, or at least a darkened area, so it stands out enough. I made a second poster in which the image does not invade the areas with text and has a higher contrast between the elements, allowing the text to stand out and increasing its legibility. Although I modified the image, it is not my original creation, therefore I could not use it for the project, but it worked well for the task.
